National Center for Scientific Research "Demokritos"
National Center for Scientific Research "Demokritos" is a self-governing research organisation, under the supervision of the Greek Government. It is the largest research organisation in Greece and is internally subdivided into 8 research institutes. The Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications (IIT) aims at playing a pivoting role in research and development (R&D), as well as in the transfer and exploitation of R&D results in relevant sectors of the Greek and international industry and society. IIT participates actively in several National, European and International research and technology programmes in cooperation with companies, industries and other research organisations in Greece, Europe and worldwide. Presently it participates in 20 R&D projects with a total budget of the order of 5 MEuro.
The Informatics Department of IIT conducts research and develops infrastructure to support intelligent information management and processing of multimedia content. Both constituent laboratories of the Informatics Department enter BOEMIE, namely the Software and Knowledge Engineering Laboratory (www.iit.demokritos.gr/skel) and the Computational Intelligence Laboratory (www.iit.demokritos.gr/cil).
Our R&D work so far has resulted in:
- Content Filtering: development of intelligent information filtering technology (filtering of web pages, spam e-mails, e-news, corporate content).
- Development of intelligent ontology driven business knowledge management.
- Individualized services for e-business through intelligent personalization technology
- Adaptive intelligent systems including neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms and machine learning.
- Development of a platform for content based image & 3D Graphical Model retrieval.
- Semantic video processing based on motion recognition, analysis and semantic characterization.
- Multimedia analysis and processing for cultural heritage applications: Development of innovative technologies for processing valuable manuscripts; development of methods for the presentation of multimedia cultural heritage material.
During recent years, members of the proposed research team have coordinated or participated in several relevant European and national R&D projects and human networks. Researchers from the Informatics Department have also recently set up a spin off private company, i-sieve technologies ltd., with a main focus to exploit commercially the in-house developed technology for online content analysis (http://www.i-sieve.com).
